Much Accomplished

Sunday September 12. Nick went out early in the morning to start more destruction. He was highly motivated by the fact that I almost bought another vintage camper on Saturday (I have a problem).

His day started with the removal of the cabinet above the stove and sink area. This is when we realized that there are things nailed from the outside in. This means that Nick gets to buy another new tool, a cutting wheel, this project is really going to push the capacity of the tool box.

I worked in the house most of the day and let him loose. My what he can accomplish when I'm not up his butt making sure he's doing it right! The closet framing is out, the whole unit that housed the fridge and cabinets, gone. Half of the bunk, the whole ceiling, the heater, and he cleaned it up as he went! I just left a huge pile of rotted, splintery crap full of staples on the floor for a week.

I was so impressed when I went out there. I helped clean up the last of the debris and we talked about our plans for her. We both have a lot of plans and ideas, now to jive them all together.

My Solo Demo

It's one week later and I go at it solo. I decide to remove the front panels. There is some obvious water damage in the front corners around bench height. Some of it had what I would guess to be the equivalent of an RV band-aid, wood grain contact paper. First panel off and first major trouble. The left side frame is rotted, well, totally gone. Nothing left, last 6 inches of that 1x3 are wet mulch. There was a point of  "what now, is this going to be fixable?" But then I remembered Liquid Nails, I love that stuff.

As I got over that and moved on to the next panel towards the ceiling another find. About a million (I do exaggerate a lot, keep that in mind through my posts) carpenter ants in between the panel and the insulation. I didn't realize in the first few seconds that they were all dead, thankfully. All of the frame is solid in this section, things are looking up.

I didn't have much time, so I picked one more thing to destroy. It had to be the wall to the closet/loo. The plan was to make it smaller, but now that it's gone we've decided no closet is the way to go. We wouldn't have done the porta-potty thing anyway. We prefer the woods.

The Beginning

She's Home! Our Scotty was delivered by the previous owner on August 16, 2010. We did not have the proper hookup for the lights so he insisted on us not towing her, what a nice guy.

How did we find her? Interesting story.

We had just sold our pop-up to a friend in hopes that by next year we would have a Scotty, as I have always loved their vintage flare. Well, within 10 minutes of our pop-up leaving or driveway my friend Chrissy called. Her and Andy were driving through Coaldale and she was just telling him we were selling the pop-up, big news being 1 of 2 PUPP members! As she was telling him about the kind of camper we were looking for they were passing one for sale in a gas station parking lot.

We left later that evening to take a ride to see her. There she was, exactly what I wanted. We got closer, the for sale sign said $600. I looked at my husband and said "you know I am going to buy this right?" He said "you know I'm not going to stop you, right?". I got the number, went inside to see if it was an employees, he said it had just been parked there earlier that day. I called the owners, 9:45pm, sorry guys, and told them I wanted it. We went to see it early the next morning. We really didn't care what it looked like inside, it was ours. And to us, it was so meant to be...

My what a project we have taken on. Luckily we moved quickly on it, so quick that I have no photos of the in tact "before" interior. First we checked the fridge, no go, so we tore it out. Then the stove, works great, so we tore it out. No need for a sink, we never used one before. Tear it out?... of course! Next the counter top. We figured we had better compose ourselves and took the next week strategically planning what was staying and going.
